Edmond Locard was the first to recreate crime scenes in a laboratory setting to understand the means and events of a crime. His laboratory of crime scene science was opened to the public in 1910. He was fundamental in the creation and recognition of forensic science, writing a series of textbooks on his findings, what he considered “Criminalistics.” One of the most significant of his contributions was his saying “Every contact leaves a trace.” By this he stressed that every individual leaves a trace of their existence, therefore the criminal would have pieces of evidence of his existence at the scene of the crime.
